Happy Thanksgiving! I’m Six Months Pregnant

24 Weeks Pregnant

How far along: 24 weeks = six months pregnant!

Baby’s size: The size of a footlong sub. Mmm, delicious. Also weird this week: the baby is most likely viable outside the womb, so s/he would be able to survive if I went into labor now.

Weight gain: The belly continues to grow! We’ll find out what the damage is at my appointment next week.

Sleep: Doing good, just still pretty sleepy all the time. I’m looking forward to sleeping a bunch over the four day weekend!

Clothes: Since there’s not much change in my clothing from last week, let me take a second to share what I’ve learned about baby clothes. According to the manufacturers, clothes for boys = both pastels and bright colors (basically everything but pink and purple), sports, trucks/cars/motorcycles, boats/sailing, robots, bears, monkeys, lions, tigers, foxes, but basically any animal + blue, “little man,” “troublemaker,” “heartbreaker,” “ladykiller,” and other references to sexuality (EW), “rebel,” and “rockstar.”

Girl clothes = almost EXCLUSIVELY pink, purple, yellow, and some combination of ruffles and/or bows. Cupcakes, polka dots, animal print (zebra or cheetah), flowers, hearts, butterflies, and kitties are also exclusively “girl” things. Often the animals even have bows on them to signify their gender. “Sweet/sweetie,” “diva,” “princess,” “adorable,” and I had to stop there because I was throwing up in my mouth. I will seriously pay you money if you can find one piece of “girl” baby clothing without any of these things on them.

WHAT THE HECK, PEOPLE. Could it be any clearer what is expected of boys vs. girls? The level of gender stereotypes and signifiers that we are plastering BABIES with is really freaking weird and creepy.  Continue reading

Twenty-three Weeks

23 weeks pregnant
23 Weeks Pregnant

How far along: Apparently 23 weeks = “super pregnant” zone.

Baby’s size: The size of a grapefruit, but make sure to pick a pretty big one. It should weigh more than a pound! Baby Bear also measures almost a foot long.

Weight gain: Man, I don’t know. I feel big. Pants that previously could zip up a little but not button now can’t zip at all, so that may be contributing to feeling rather large. I am trying to do as much walking as I can though, and Sammy is happy to help with that. Check out this article I found about exercise during pregnancy helping the baby’s brain.

Sleep: Gah so tired. I have been lucky enough not to have any pregnancy insomnia, but I am just super sleepy. One night this week it took me an extra half hour to fall asleep because Baby Bear kept moving around!

Clothes: The stretchier, the better. Super uncomfortable this week.

Cravings: None, really. Coffee, but that’s more about wanting the caffeine to get me going in the mornings. I’ve never drank more than one cup a day, so I don’t have to try to cut back or anything, which is cool.

Food aversions: None

Symptoms: So not only does my back ache on a daily basis now, what I thought was an occasional sore muscle twinge is officially sciatica. Ouch. Prenatal yoga last weekend was so painful, I couldn’t stop myself from making faces so badly that the instructor came and asked if I was okay after class. Also, regular heartburn at inconvenient times. This is…decidedly not fun. And I was doing so well! I was almost beginning to wonder if I actually liked being pregnant. Oh yeah, nope. No thanks.

Movement: Baby Bear is kicking me on a daily basis now. And in addition to sitting on my sciatic nerve, s/he likes to sit on my bladder. Extra bonus points if that happens 15 minutes after I just went to the bathroom.

Baby’s sex: I had another dream about the baby! This time it was actually already born and was a boy. I can’t believe I’ve had one dream about it being a girl and another about it being a boy! This is so not helpful.

Highlight of the week: Picking out the paint color for the nursery. I have a really hard time visualizing how a color will look in an entire room, but I think once we finish painting it will really start coming together.

Twenty-two Weeks

22 Weeks Pregnant
22 Weeks Pregnant

How far along: Five and a half months! Allan is already freaking out about pre-registering at the hospital and having a bag packed and ready to go just in case.

Baby’s size: Almost a foot long and weighs about a pound, allegedly the size of a papaya. Someone fact check this for me, because I can’t remember the last time I actually held a real papaya.

Weight gain: +1 this week? You guys know how bad I am at this.

Sleep: I do feel tired during the day more often, but I am still sleeping normally through the night (falling asleep fast and staying asleep besides a couple bathroom trips).

Clothes: Feeling a bit more frump-tastic as I struggle to find things to layer on to stay warm since it’s dropped down to lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s! What do I do when my coat doesn’t button anymore?

Cravings: Potbelly. Specifically, an Italian on wheat with an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie and a cream soda. I found out that there’s one coming soon to Knoxville, but there isn’t a single one within 100 miles of Chattanooga or Charlotte for now. Sigh.

Food aversions: None.

Symptoms: I just noticed this week that my hair isn’t shedding as much as it normally does when I wash and blowdry it. Maybe that means I finally am getting this rumored thick gorgeous pregnancy mane I’ve heard about?

Movement: I normally feel thumps of kicks late at night when I’m lying still and sometimes early in the morning. Apparently the baby now has a 12-14 hr sleep cycle, so maybe that’s what’s going on.

Baby’s sex: No more dreams about the sex, so I’m pretty much back to being 50/50 on this one.

Highlight of the week: Getting to see my lovely friends Jess and David get married last weekend! They put a bunch of us college friends up in a house together, so I got in some awesome quality time with some of my favorite people in the world. It was a little surreal having people touch my belly and want to talk about Baby Bear a bunch, but maybe one day my brain will catch up to my body and realize that I really am pregnant and having a baby in about four months! (eeeee still weird)

What I miss: This week, I miss DC. I got to talk to my old co-worker Lydia this week, and I realized I miss her, walking to work, and being around everything in Chinatown on a daily basis. I really miss the brick streets and great coffee shops of Capitol Hill, and looking forward to all of the fun things to do on the weekends.

Twenty-one Weeks

21 Weeks Pregnant
21 Weeks Pregnant

How far along: 21 weeks

Baby’s size: 10 1/2 inches long, which is about the length of a giant gummy bear

Weight gain: +1 this week, for a total of +11

Sleep: Still sleeping pretty good! I do feel more tired during the day now though.

Clothes: No new additions this week, but my preggo clothes are still pretty comfortable and enjoyable.

Cravings: I’m just eating all the time, and a lot of it! It’s definitely more enjoyable to eat those sweets and starches than super healthy salads and veggies, but I’m still trying to eat a balanced diet.

Food aversions: None

Symptoms: My back still hurts by the end of the day, and I wake up congested every morning. Luckily, the congestion clears up pretty quickly once I’m up.

Movement: I feel thumps of kicks late only at night, mostly. Baby bear also kicks when Itty settles on my tummy and purrs.

Baby’s sex: I had my first dream about the baby’s sex! I dreamed Allan and I found out it was a girl.

Highlight of the week: I went to prenatal yoga for the first time last weekend, and this weekend I get to be in my college friend Jess’ wedding.

20 Weeks, or Five Months Pregnant!

20 Weeks Pregnant
20 Weeks Pregnant

How far along: We’re halfway there!! Baby Bear has been cooking for twenty weeks, six days. I’ve been pregnant for five whole months (even though I’ve only known for about 3).

Baby’s size: Butternut squash size. Or as long as a banana? This stuff is weird. The point is, s/he weighs 13 oz and is measuring totally normal and healthy.

Weight gain: Up NINE POUNDS from last month, for a total of +10. How in the world?? I am mostly just shocked because I’ve never gained that much weight in such a short time in my life. Totally unconcerned otherwise, so bring on the delicious food! Baby’s hungry.

Sleep: Sleep. Sleep is good. I still normally get up at least once during the night to go to the bathroom, but mostly I sleep like a rock for a solid 8 hours.

Clothes: I made a Target run this week to take advantage of a 25% off coupon (if you don’t have the Cartwheel app, get it) and it was awesome. I got a couple of pairs of maternity leggings and four shirts (two tunics and two comfy long-sleeves).

Cravings: I’ve decided this is the absolute best time to be pregnant. Halloween candy, followed by Thanksgiving goodness, then Christmas cookies/bark/omnomnom. Yessss. I’ll take two of everything.

Food aversions: None. Didn’t you see I gained 9lbs?  Continue reading
